Macy Chen was born in Taiwan and came to the New York in 2002 to further her studies in Jazz music at Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. Macy has been singing as long as she can remember. “At three years old, I was singing commercial jingles on the bus”! Macy’s musical talent seems to run in the family. Her grandfather was a jazz saxophone player in Japan and her mom was her first piano teacher. At the age of 13, she decided to turn her passion for music into a career when she was accepted into the music program at her junior high school in Taichung, Taiwan.
Macy was then accepted at Suchow University where she earned her bachelors degree in classical music. Her first job after graduation was teaching piano at Yamaha School of Music. Uninspired with classical music, she decided to take a job as a production assistant with Pony Cayon Records, a Japan based label. This provided an opportunity for her to sing as a studio chorus singer and join numerous international concert tours for many famous Asian pop singers.
Macy released her solo album, Woman, in 1996 and was sought out as a guest singer for various fashion shows in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and China for Cartier, Gucci, Chanel, Hermes, Swatch, Chrysler, Estee Lauder among others.
Macy had the privilege of being a guest vocalist with Yo-Yo Ma on the album Supercharme published by Sony Records. She was also invited to perform with renowned Japanese violinist Taro Hakase for his TV concert aired on “HDTV SHOW” and broadcast by China Television Company. It is interesting to note that Taro Hakase recorded with Celine Dion on the song “To Love You More”. Macy also performed at a private party for the current Taiwan President Chen, Shai-Bian.
After having established her reputation in the music industry, Macy skills as a vocal trainer and producer were sought by numerous Asian pop singers having contracts with Rolling Stone, Sony, Virgin, Warner Records and EMI Entertainment Taiwan Ltd. Macy was the vocal producer for Elva Xiao on her self titled debut album which is still the best seller for Virgin Records in Asia.
